UN hopes Afghan-Pak ceasefire to hold

KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations has expressed hope that the recently agreed ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan would remain in place.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, told a press briefing that all of the outstanding issues will be dealt with diplomatically.

In a response to a query, he said: “Well, we hope that the ceasefire will hold and that all of the outstanding issues will be dealt with diplomatically.”

His remarks come after several days of heightened tension between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

On Sunday, following talks between the delegations of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) and Pakistan in Doha— mediated by Qatar and Turkey— the two sided agreed to a “comprehensive and meaningful ceasefire.”

The next round of talks between the two countries is scheduled to take place in Turkey on October 25.
