2 killed, over 1m displaced in Philippines typhoon

KABUL (Pajhwok): At least two people have been killed and more than one million others displaced following a powerful storm in the Philippines, media reports said on Monday.

The Guardian, quoting Philippine officials, said the storm caused flash floods, landslides and strong winds in several areas.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (NDRRMS) said assessments of the damage to infrastructure and houses were still underway.

About 6,000 evacuation centers have been opened to host more than 92,000 families temporarily, the report added.

As of Monday morning, two deaths had been confirmed.

Officials explained: “Rescue teams saved 14 people trapped on the roof of a flooded house in a low-lying area. Another man, who reported that strong winds were tearing off his roof, was rescued along with four family members”.

Meanwhile, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of emergency due to the widespread destruction caused by the typhoon.

The storm weakened on Monday morning as it crossed the country’s largest island, which includes the capital Manila.
