LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Local officials in southern Helmand say construction has begun on five retaining walls worth 72 million Afghanis in Greshk district. Once completed, the walls will protect hundreds of acres of agricultural land from flood risks.
Mawlawi Mohammad Qasim Riyaz, spokesperson for the Helmand governor, said the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, under Minister Mullah Mohammad Younus Akhundzada, initiated the project to build retaining walls in five areas of the villages Kalla Gaz, Shorki, and Adam Khan in Greshk district.
According to Riyaz, the total length of the walls will be 3,236 meters, and the project will be funded with 72 million Afghanis from the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) budget.
He added that the project’s inauguration meeting was attended by Minister Mullah Mohammad Younus Akhundzada and his delegation, Helmand Governor Mawlawi Amanuddin Mansoor, and several other officials and tribal elders.
In his remarks, the minister said the IEA is committed to providing services to the people in both security and development sectors, especially in areas in need of development projects.
Similarly, Helmand Governor Mawlawi Amanuddin Mansoor thanked the ministry for its efforts and assured full cooperation in all areas.
Officials noted that the construction of the retaining walls will create employment opportunities for hundreds of people.
Once completed, the walls will protect hundreds of acres of farmland and residential homes in these villages from flooding and the overflowing waters of the Helmand River.
