Iran seeks to expand trade, imports from Afghanistan

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The governor of Iran’s Razavi Khorasan province, leading a trade delegation, says Tehran’s plan to expand imports from Afghanistan and strengthen commercial ties with Herat to meet regional market demands.

During a meeting in Herat, both sides discussed enhancing cross-border trade, facilitating transit and exploring joint economic opportunities.

Governor Sheikh Mawlana Noor Ahmad Islamjar expressed optimism that the Iranian delegation’s visit would play a significant role in strengthening economic relations, developing joint markets and boosting regional trade.

Islamjar emphasized that expanding the Herat–Khawaf railway for commercial transport, increasing transit cooperation and ensuring readiness to facilitate economic partnerships were top priorities for Herat’s local administration.

Ghulam Hassan Mozaffari, governor of Razavi Khorasan, stressed the importance of greater collaboration between the two provinces.

He noted that his delegation had arrived in Herat to explore opportunities, maximize the potential of the region, eliminate trade barriers and transform the Islam Qala border crossing into a regional model for economic exchange.

Mozaffari also highlighted Iran’s interest in increasing imports from Afghanistan, with a focus on supplying Iran’s market needs through Afghan-made products.

He reiterated Tehran’s commitment to strengthening trade relations and ensuring mutual economic growth through closer cooperation.
