Homes searched in Washington, San Diego after Guard attack

KABUL (Pajhwok): Media reports on Friday said that U.S. National Guard member Sarah Bäckström, who was shot on Wednesday, has died.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has searched several homes in Washington and San Diego, including the residence of the detained suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal.

The shooting took place on Wednesday, when two U.S. National Guard soldiers were shot and severely wounded near the White House.

Following the attack, former U.S. President Donald Trump said the suspect had entered the country from Afghanistan in 2021. He claimed that individuals like him had been allowed into the U.S. without proper security vetting during President Joe Biden’s administration. Trump added that his administration would reassess all Afghan immigration cases processed during Biden’s presidency.

Reports indicate that Lakanwal was taken into custody while wounded.

Trump also confirmed that Sarah Bäckström, one of the two National Guard members injured in Wednesday’s attack, has died. The second soldier remains in critical condition.

The FBI has conducted multiple searches in Washington and San Diego in connection with the case.

Reuters, citing FBI Director Kash Patel, reported that agents also searched the home of Lakanwal, an Afghan refugee, seizing mobile phones, iPads, and computers, and interviewing members of his family.
