CHARIKAR (Pajhwok): About 180 birds of various species have been released back into their natural habitat in the central Parwan province, an official said on Tuesday.
Environmental Protection Director Mawlawi Hafizullah Mansoor said the released birds included suri, sparrow, turtledove, wagtail, mountain finch and quail, which had been illegally hunted and kept by hunters in Bagram district of the province.
He stressed that his department had conducted inspections in different areas of Bagram district and taken serious measures to prevent the illegal hunting of birds and wildlife, following a decree by the supreme leader of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA).
He added that department staff had held discussions with local residents and hunters, explaining the importance of protecting birds and the environment.
He urged hunters to stop hunting birds and said local people had welcomed the move and pledged to cooperate with the department in preventing bird hunting and trafficking.
According to officials, more than 3,000 birds have been confiscated from hunters and released back into the wild in Parwan during the first six months of the current year.
