KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran wants to connect China with Europe via Afghanistan through railway, the country’s railway chief has said.
The Iranian Railways Director met with Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and said his country wanted to expand the railway through Afghanistan to connect China and China to Europe by utilizing Afghanistan’s strategic location.
A statement from Baradar’s office said he met with a delegation led by the Director of the Iranian Railways Jabar Ali Zakari today.
The two sides discussed economic relations, trade and cooperation in the development of the railway between Afghanistan and Iran.
It quoted Zakari as saying his country wanted to expand the railway through Afghanistan to connect it to China and China with Europe using Afghanistan’s strategic location.
He proposed that a joint committee should be formed in this regard and that talks should be held with companies.
In the meeting, Baradar said he had discussed with Iran’s vice president the value of this project three years ago and had provided information about its economic worth.
Mullah Baradar added that a joint committee should be formed in this regard and practical work should begin as soon as possible.
