KABUL (Pajhwok): US President Donald Trump says Washington will run Venezuela after US troops seized the country’s president, media reports said on Sunday.
After months of threats and pressure tactics, the United States carried out air strikes in Venezuela and toppled President Nicolas Maduro, who was seized and taken to New York to face trial, Al Jazeera reported.
It said Maduro arrived late on Saturday at a US military base after being “captured” by American forces in Caracas.
Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez condemned the move as a “kidnapping” and said Maduro remained “the only president of Venezuela.”
Trump said Washington would “run” Venezuela and make use of the country’s vast oil reserves.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council is scheduled to meet tomorrow (Monday) to discuss the situation. UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the US action set “a dangerous precedent.”
