UNSC to meet on development in Venezuela following US action

KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is due to meet tomorrow (Monday) to discuss the United States’ attack on Venezuela, a media report said on Sunday.

The meeting of the 15-member council was requested by Colombia, with the backing of Russia and China, Reuters reported.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the US action as setting “a dangerous precedent”.

The UN Security Council has met twice – in October and December – over the escalating tensions between the US and Venezuela.

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Washington would run Venezuela “until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition”, though it remains unclear how the US plans to oversee the country.

At least seven explosions were heard in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, early on Saturday, accompanied by the sound of low-flying aircraft.

Trump claimed that the United States had “captured” Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and flown them out of the country following what he described as “large-scale” strikes.
