Erdoğan raises concerns over Venezuela’s stability in talks with Trump

KABUL (Pajhwok): Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has told his United States counterpart, Donald Trump that any attack on national sovereignty or violation of international law could lead to serious repercussions for the global order, stressing that Venezuela must not be allowed to descend into instability.

Erdoğan held a telephone conversation with President Trump on Monday, the Anadolu news agency reported.

Speaking to Turkish television following a cabinet meeting, Erdoğan said: “We strive to act in the best interests of Turkey and the friendly people of Venezuela. Mr Maduro and the Venezuelan people have repeatedly demonstrated their friendship towards our nation.”

He stated that he had conveyed Ankara’s sensitivities to President Trump, emphasising that Venezuela should not be permitted to slide into instability.

“Violating countries’ sovereignty and trampling on international law are risky steps that could lead to serious global consequences,” Erdoğan added.

Reaffirming Turkey’s position, he said Ankara would continue to stand by the “friendly people of Venezuela” in their pursuit of prosperity, peace and development.

According to Erdoğan, Turkey is among the leading countries worldwide in defending justice, legitimacy and international law.

“From Gaza to Syria, wherever there is injustice, lawlessness or oppression, we have made our position clear. When it comes to our principles, we make no compromises or calculations,” he said.

The United States reportedly carried out attacks on Venezuela on Saturday, during which President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were “captured” and flown out of the country.
