KABUL (Pajhwok): The Iranian government has declared three days of national mourning for those it described as “martyrs”, including members of the security forces killed in recent protests, according to Tasnim News Agency.
In a statement, the government said the president and cabinet members were mourning the victims of the latest unrest.
It also called for nationwide rallies in support of the Islamic Republic to be held on Monday.
The cabinet said the three-day mourning period was intended to honour those who lost their lives during the disturbances.
Without providing detailed figures, the government claimed that civilians, members of the Basij militia and security personnel were among those killed.
The violent demonstrations, sparked by economic hardship and the sharp depreciation of the Iranian rial, have spread across several cities and entered their third week.
According to reports, at least 48 members of the security forces and 483 protesters have been killed since the unrest began.
