Forced marriage of 13-year-old orphan girl prevented in Herat

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The Department of Vice and Virtue in western Herat province has prevented the forced marriage of a 13-year-old orphan girl in Shindand district, an official said on Tuesday.

Shaikh Aziz-ur-Rahman Al-Muhajir, head of the department, told Pajhwok Afghan News that some of the girl’s relatives had sought to force her into marrying an elderly man in exchange for a large sum of money.

He added that, upon receiving the report and reviewing the case, department officials intervened promptly and took the necessary measures to halt the forced marriage.

According to him, in recent months the department has dealt with several cases, including the house confinement of women, forced marriages, domestic violence, and other violations of women’s religious rights.

He noted that in all such cases, appropriate religious and legal measures have been applied.
