Afghan, Indonesian officials discuss expanding sports ties

KABUL (Pajhwok): Director General of the Olympic Committee, Physical Education and Sports Mawlawi Ahmadullah Wasiq and President of the Indonesian Futsal Committee Michael Victor Sianipar have discussed various issues, including the participation of Afghan players in Indonesia’s futsal leagues.

Wasiq met Sianipar during his official visit to Indonesia, the National Olympic Committee, Physical Education and Sports Directorate stated on its X handle.

The meeting focused on expanding cooperation between the futsal committees of the two countries and creating opportunities for Afghan athletes to compete in Indonesia’s futsal leagues.

The statement added that the two sides also discussed providing training opportunities in Indonesia for Afghan students and residents interested in futsal.

Both parties agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding between their futsal committees to ensure sustained and institutional cooperation.

Indonesia is currently hosting the 2026 AFC Futsal Asian Cup, featuring 16 teams, including Afghanistan.

Afghanistan defeated Saudi Arabia and Malaysia in their first and second group-stage matches, respectively, and qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament.

The national squad will face Japan in the quarter-final tomorrow (Tuesday).
