KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 14 migrants have been killed after a boat collided with a Greek coastguard vessel in the Aegean Sea near the island of Chios, a media report said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred around 9:00pm local time on Tuesday (19:00 GMT) off the coast of Chios in the Mersinidi area, Reuters reported.
A coastguard official said officers spotted a dinghy carrying migrants heading towards Chios, which lies a few miles off the Turkish coast and ordered it to turn back.
Two coastguard officers were injured and taken to hospital, while 24 migrants were rescued, a second official told Reuters. Witnesses said around 30 to 35 people were on board.
The coastguard said a search and rescue operation was underway, with coastguard vessels, private boats and divers taking part.
