UNSC to meet on IS threats today

KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is all set to hold a meeting on the threat posed by the Islamic State (IS), also known as Daesh, in Iraq and Syria to international peace and security on Wednesday.

The anticipated briefers were Acting Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism and Head of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) Alexandre Zouev and Executive Director of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) Natalia Gherman, UNSC said in a statement.

It said Chris Elmore, the UK’s Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, was expected to chair the meeting.

The statement added circulated to Council members on 31 January, the threat posed by IS has steadily increased since the previous report in August 2025, becoming more complex and intensifying in multiple regions.

It notes that IS continues to exploit armed conflict, political instability and weak governance, remaining a threat to human rights, development and, more broadly, to international peace and security.
