Trump says regime change in Iran “the best thing that could happen”

KABUL (Pajhwok): US President Donald Trump has said that regime change in Iran would be “the best thing that could happen.”

Negotiations between Iran and the United States were held a week ago in Muscat, the capital of Oman.

Following the talks, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that both sides had outlined their positions and demands and agreed to consult with their respective governments before deciding on the next round of negotiations.

Shortly after the meeting between Iranian and US representatives concluded, Trump stressed that Iran must reach an agreement with Washington, warning that otherwise Tehran would face “consequences.”

According to the BBC, Trump recently responded to a question in North Carolina about whether he supports regime change in Iran by saying: “It seems like that’s the best thing that could happen.”

He declined to specify who he would like to see take power in Iran, but added: “There are people.”

“For 47 years, they’ve been talking and talking and talking. In the meantime, we’ve lost a lot of lives,” he said on Friday.

Trump has previously threatened Iran with military action and stated that US warships have been deployed in the region.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, described the Oman talks as “a good start.”

In an interview with Al Jazeera, he emphasized the continuation of negotiations with the United States and warned that in the event of a US military attack, Tehran would target American military bases in the region.
