2D Seismic survey begins in 3 Afghan-Tajik oil basin blocks

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) has announced that, under an agreement with the geological company Uzbekgeofizika JSC, 2D seismic survey operations have commenced for the Mohammad Jan field, Ahmadabad, and Shumar blocks in the Afghan–Tajik oil basin.

Homayoun Afghan, the ministry’s spokesman, told a meeting held on Tuesday in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, that the free 2D seismic survey for these three blocks reflects strong bilateral ties, goodwill from Uzbekistan, good neighborliness, and effective management by the MoMP.

He added, “Afghanistan has vast and rich mineral resources, and we are determined to manage this great divine gift efficiently, with sound plans and practical steps, so that these assets contribute to the country’s sustainable development.”

Abdul Khalil Hanfi, head of hydrocarbon surveys at the MoMP, said the Afghan–Tajik basin is a major confirmed oil region in northern Afghanistan.

He noted that the survey will cover only the Mohammad Jan field, Ahmadabad, and Shumar blocks—covering a total area of 7,617 square kilometers—out of the basin’s 11 blocks.

The ministry added that the survey teams are ready to work jointly with Afghan authorities and pledged to continue comprehensive cooperation while fostering good neighborly relations.
