9 killed in Karachi protest near US consulate

KABUL (Pajhwok): At least nine people were killed near the United States Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, after protests erupted following the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, media outlets reported on Sunday.

Several others were injured when security forces opened fire to disperse hundreds of pro-Iran demonstrators attempting to storm the consulate early Sunday morning, according to Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera, quoting Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed, reported that at least nine bodies were brought to Karachi’s Civil Hospital.

“A large number of protesters gathered outside the UN office in Gilgit-Baltistan and burned down the building,” local government spokesperson Shabbir Mir told Reuters. He added that no casualties had been reported in the incident.

A separate demonstration is expected near the diplomatic enclave in Islamabad, which houses the US Embassy, later on Sunday.

Protests over Khamenei’s reported killing have also been reported in several other countries, including Iraq, Morocco, and Indian-administered Kashmir.
