CHARIKAR (Pajhwok): Security forces in central Parwan province have arrested a six-member gang accused of impersonating representatives of telecommunications companies and defrauding people of hundreds of thousands of afghanis under the pretext of fake prizes.
In a statement, the Parwan Police Headquarters said personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department detained the group following public complaints and sustained surveillance operations.
The suspects are alleged to have been involved in credit card theft and organized fraud. According to the statement, they would pose as telecom agents, falsely promise prizes to victims and then demand money in return.
The group was arrested during coordinated operations in different parts of the province. Authorities also recovered nearly 40 SIM cards and 19 mobile phones from their possession.
The statement added that the gang had been operating in an organized and professional manner, collecting large sums of money from citizens.
