KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran’s parliamentary National Security Commission has approved a proposal to impose tolls on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a media report said on Tuesday.
The proposal envisages charging ships for transit through one of the world’s most critical oil routes.
A member of the commission confirmed the development to Fars News Agency.
The plan includes provisions to bar vessels linked to the United States and Israel from passing through the strait, and also targets countries enforcing sanctions against Iran.
The plan further indicates that Oman would cooperate in the legal framework governing the proposal.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital maritime chokepoints, linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean. It plays a crucial role in global energy trade, with roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil passing through it.
