UNICEF to support 1.3m severely malnourished children in Afghanistan in 2026

KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) says it plans to support 1.3 million children suffering from severe acute malnutrition in Afghanistan in 2026.

In a post on its X account, UNICEF said 610,000 children received treatment in 2025 and the figure was expected to rise to 1.3 million in 2026.

It comes as the World Food Programme (WFP) in Afghanistan said in February 2026 that a budget shortfall had forced it to assist only one in four malnourished children in the country.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sharafat Zaman, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), said in July 2025 that from July 2024 to July 2025, 2.9 million children and mothers had been registered with malnutrition at government health centres.
