KABUL (Pajhwok): China said on Friday that negotiations between Afghanistan and Pakistan are progressing steadily.
Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told a press conference: “Both Pakistan and Afghanistan attach importance to and welcome China’s mediation, and are willing to sit down for talks again, which is a positive development.”
She added that China, which shares a border with both countries, has been actively facilitating dialogue by holding phone calls with their foreign ministers and dispatching a special envoy for visits in March.
Mao also noted that the three countries would release further details at an appropriate time.
Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday that, at China’s initiative, a mid-level delegation from the Islamic Emirate had traveled to China to hold formal talks with the Pakistani side, based on its principled position.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs likewise confirmed that its delegation had traveled to China for talks with Afghan officials.
The talks are currently ongoing in Urumqi, China.
