KABUL (Pajhwok): The National Disaster Preparedness Authority (NDPA) says that 225 incidents involving landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) were recorded across Afghanistan over the past year, leaving 96 people dead and 378 injured.

Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, the authority’s spokesman, said data from the Mine Action Coordination Directorate showed that the incidents occurred between April 2025 and the end of March 2026, with Kunar province recording the highest number of cases at 40.

He added that the incidents claimed the lives of women and children as well and injured hundreds more. Over the same period, the NDPA cleared 94.9 square kilometres of mine-contaminated land and detected and defused more than 45,000 landmines.

Hamad said more than two million people were reached through mine risk awareness programs during the past year.

The spokesman also noted that the Islamic Emirate has allocated 70 million afghanis for mine clearance activities in 2026.
