HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A number of calligraphy works, including a handwritten copy of the Holy Qur’an, have been put on display at an exhibition in western Herat province, officials said on Tuesday.
Officials stated that the four-day exhibition was inaugurated on Tuesday by the Department of Information and Culture in cooperation with the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA).
Two days of the exhibition have been allocated for women visitors and the remaining two days for men.
Abdul Jalil Tawana, head of the Calligraphers Association, said the handwritten copy of the Holy Qur’an was completed over a period of 16 months by female calligraphers from Herat.
He noted that providing such opportunities contributes to the growth of calligraphy as an art form and helps introduce artists’ works to the public.
Mawlawi Abdul Mateen Adil, head of culture and arts at the Department of Information and Culture, said that in addition to the handwritten Qur’an, nearly 100 other calligraphy pieces were also displayed at the exhibition.
Meanwhile, Turkey’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Cihad Erginay, visited the exhibition and reaffirmed his country’s support for cultural and artistic programmes, describing such initiatives as important for strengthening cultural ties between the two countries.
