5 killed, hundreds of homes destroyed in Badghis, Ghor floods

FEROZKOH (Pajhwok): At least five people, including one woman, have died and hundreds of homes have been destroyed after flash floods struck the western provinces of Badghis and Ghor, local officials said on Thursday.

Baridad Saber, head of the Disaster Preparedness Department in Badghis, told Pajhwok that five people were killed in the province, including one woman. Three of the victims were members of the same family.

He said the floods also destroyed 30 homes and damaged agricultural land. He added that the figures are preliminary and that the number of casualties and losses could rise.

Meanwhile, reports said heavy rain accompanied by hail was recorded on Wednesday evening in the districts of Aab Kamari, Bala Murghab, Muqur, Qadis and Ghormach in Badghis province.

In Ghor province, the governor’s media office said in a statement that floods on Wednesday in the village of “Jeh” in Murghab district destroyed nearly 100 homes, dozens of jeribs of farmland, and a number of fruit-bearing and non-fruit-bearing trees.

The statement added that the floods have severely disrupted the lives of local residents, who are now in urgent need of assistance.
