KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) Chief Shahabuddin Delawar and UK Special Representative for Afghanistan Richard Lindsay have discussed support for internally displaced persons (IDPs), returning migrants and the expansion of humanitarian assistance.
In a statement posted on X, ARCS said Delawar met Lindsay at his office, where both sides discussed assistance for IDPs, returnees from neighbouring countries and ways to expand humanitarian support.
Delawar expressed gratitude to the United Kingdom for its previous assistance and briefed the envoy on the organisation’s ongoing activities.
He said centres for the treatment and care of mental health patients are currently operating across seven zones of the country.
According to him, around 1,500 male and female patients are receiving treatment at these centres, while a similar number are being provided services at home.
He added that a specialised hospital for children with congenital heart defects would soon become operational in Kabul, where up to 2,000 children are expected to undergo surgery annually.
Delawar also stressed the need to expand assistance to meet the basic needs of returnees and internally displaced families.
For his part, the UK envoy appreciated ARCS’s humanitarian work and assured continued cooperation.
He said British humanitarian assistance would soon be channelled to ARCS through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
