Flood-damaged roads in Ghor, Badghis; residents demand repairs

FEROZKOH (Pajhwok): Following the destruction and blockage of transportation routes in several districts of western Ghor and Badghis provinces due to recent floods, residents are calling for the reopening and reconstruction of these roads. Local officials say efforts are underway to restore access.

Lal Bahadur, a resident of Farooq district in Ghor, told Pajhwok that heavy rainfall occurred three days ago, resulting in the complete destruction of roads and their closure from the provincial center.

He added: “We are traveling with great difficulty through dangerous roads; we are facing many problems… we request the authorities to reopen the roads.”

Abdul Ghani, a resident of Marghab district in the province, said that recent rains and floods have destroyed hundreds of homes, agricultural lands, gardens, and transportation routes.

He added: “We are in a difficult situation. We face problems reaching the center to meet our basic needs.”

Residents of Qadis district in Badghis also have similar complaints.

Khalilullah, a resident of this district, said: “The recent rains have badly damaged the Qadis road. Vehicles cannot travel easily, large potholes have formed along the route, many paths have been cut off, and vehicles are forced to pass through people’s farmland.”

Meanwhile, Izatullah, another resident of the district, said: “Previously it took us two hours to travel this route, but now we are forced to spend four hours because vehicles move with great difficulty.”

All of the residents have called for the reconstruction of these roads.

Officials: Efforts underway to resolve transportation problems

Mawlawi Abdul Karim Abu Shaib, head of Public Works in Ghor, said: “Our teams have been assigned and we are trying to reopen the destroyed roads as soon as possible.”

According to him, some aid has already been sent to the affected people.

Rahimuddin Rahimi, spokesperson for the governor of Badghis, said: “The repair and asphalt work of the Qala-e-Naw–Qadis road and other sections has been shared with central authorities, and it is expected that the work will begin soon.”
