18 killed in floods, landslides in Kenya

KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 18 people have been killed after heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides across several parts of Kenya, media reports said on Monday.

Landslides were reported on Sunday in Tharaka-Nithi, Elgeyo-Marakwet and Kiambu counties in the country’s central and eastern regions, according to Al Jazeera, citing Kenyan police.

Authorities confirmed the death toll and urged residents to remain vigilant amid ongoing severe weather conditions.

Police said the floods and landslides have affected numerous families, displaced households and caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure. However, the exact number of displaced people has not yet been determined.

Local media reported widespread flooding in the capital, Nairobi, where streets were inundated and both vehicles and pedestrians struggled to navigate through the floodwaters.

This marks the second deadly flooding incident in less than two months in Kenya. In March, floods in Nairobi claimed at least 37 lives.
