KABUL (Pajhwok): Pakistani media have reported that Mawlana Mohammad Idris, a religious scholar from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, died in an armed attack carried out by unknown gunmen.
According to Aaj News, unidentified gunmen targeted Mawlana Mohammad Idris’s vehicle in the Utmanzai area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The report said he sustained critical injuries in the attack and died while being taken to hospital.
Police said two officers were also injured in the incident.
Local security officials confirmed that the attackers fled the scene and police have launched an operation to arrest them.
It is reported that Mawlana Idris had recently praised Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir in a speech, a statement that drew strong criticism both inside and outside the country.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
