13 Ghazni mountaineers climb 3,000-metre peak

GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): A 13-member mountaineering team has climbed a nearly 3,000-metre peak of Targan mountain in the Jaghatu district of southern Ghazni province as part of efforts to qualify for the national mountaineering team.

‌Haji Bilal Mujahid, head of Physical Education and Sports, told Pajhwok Afghan News the aim of the difficult training exercise was to prepare more athletes from the province to join the national team.

He said four athletes from Ghazni had previously qualified for the national mountaineering team.

Mountaineering Federation chief Farhad Azimi said such exercises were essential for strengthening athletes mentally and physically.

He added the mountains of Targan had difficult routes and their altitude posed a serious challenge for every athlete.

“The athletes are improving day by day and getting closer to national team standards. This is an organised and talented group that should be supported and provided opportunities to compete in other provinces as well,” Azimi noted.

The Ghazni mountaineering team would continue intensive training in the coming weeks to meet the requirements for qualification to the national team, he concluded.
