China to buy $17bn in US agricultural goods: White House

KABUL (Pajhwok): China will purchase at least $17 billion worth of agricultural products from the United States annually following the summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, the White House announced.

According to a fact sheet released on Sunday, China will continue the purchases through 2028, with the 2026 target to be applied proportionately for the remainder of the year.

The White House, quoted by Al Jazeera, said the agreement is in addition to China’s earlier commitment to purchase at least 87 million metric tonnes of US soybeans, made during the Trump-Xi summit in South Korea in October.

Under the agreement, China will also restore market access for US beef by renewing expired listings for more than 400 production facilities.

In addition, Beijing will resume poultry imports from US states certified by the Department of Agriculture as free from avian influenza, the fact sheet stated.

Trump and Xi also agreed to establish two new bodies — the US-China Board of Trade and the US-China Board of Investment — to oversee trade and investment relations between the two countries, according to the White House.

China has not yet officially confirmed or commented on the announcement. The Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC, also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The announcement followed the conclusion of a two-day summit between Trump and Xi on Friday, which featured extensive ceremony and cordial exchanges but produced few concrete agreements.
