LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Two children were killed and their mother injured in an explosion of an unexploded shell in Khanshin district of southern Helmand province on Wednesday, a police official said.
Police spokesman Mullah Nasir Ahmad Muhajir told Pajhwok Afghan News that the incident took place this morning.
He added that the children had found an unexploded shell and brought it home, where it was thrown into a fire, triggering the explosion.
According to him, a 10-year-old and a 3-year-old child were killed in the blast, while their mother sustained injuries.
Unexploded ordnance left over from past conflicts continues to threaten civilian lives in Afghanistan, particularly children, and causes casualties from time to time.
