KABUL (Pajhwok): The bodies of two men and two children have been recovered from a river following a traffic accident on the Kabul-Jalalabad highway in the Surobi district of Kabul province, the National Disaster Preparedness Authority (NDPA) said on Saturday.

In a statement, NDPA said two vehicles collided in Surobi district on Friday before plunging into the river.

Preliminary information suggested that nine people were travelling in the two vehicles and went missing in the water after the accident.

The statement added that the Laghman Department of Disaster Preparedness, in coordination with the Afghan Red Crescent Society and other relevant bodies, had launched a search and rescue operation, with emergency teams searching along the river route for the victims.

It said the bodies of two men and two children had so far been recovered from the river.

Officials said the search and rescue operation would continue until all the victims were found.

NDPA urged drivers to avoid speeding, reckless driving and dangerous overtaking while travelling on the Kabul-Jalalabad highway.
