IEA offers condolences, aid to victims of deadly Laghman traffic accident

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) has expressed condolences over a deadly traffic accident in eastern Laghman province, while the National Disaster Management Authority has allocated 730,000 afghanis in emergency assistance for the affected families.

Around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, a cargo vehicle carrying returning migrants overturned on the Kabul–Jalalabad highway in the Sarkhakan area of Qarghayi district, Laghman province.

Officials said at least 20 people were killed and 33 others injured in the incident.

Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, wrote on his X account: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. We pray for Jannat-ul-Firdaws for all the martyrs and for a speedy recovery for the injured. We express our sympathy to the families of the martyrs and injured and pray for patience and great reward for them from Allah Almighty.”

Mullah Nooruddin Turabi, head of the National Disaster Management Authority, also expressed deep sorrow and sympathy over the incident.

In a condolence statement, the authority said: “Unfortunately, in this tragic incident, 20 of our compatriots were martyred and 33 others were injured, including women, children, and men.”

However, according to Mawlawi Aminullah Sharif, head of public health in Nangarhar, 22 people were killed and 36 others were injured in the incident.

The National Disaster Management Authority further said that 730,000 afghanis in emergency assistance have been allocated to meet the urgent needs of the affected families.

It added that officials in Kunar, Nangarhar, and Laghman provinces have been instructed to take necessary measures for the treatment of the injured and support for the families of the victims.

The authority also assured affected families that it will continue to provide support and cooperation within available resources.
