ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Two girls, aged 15 and 11, from Kang district have died after falling into a water canal in southwestern Nimroz province, an official said on Tuesday.
Mullah Abdul Qahar Nasir, administrative chief of Kang district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the two children, who were sisters, fell into the canal at around 12:00 noon on Monday while going to fetch drinking water.
He said that after local residents informed district authorities, officials were dispatched to the area. However, before their arrival, villagers managed to recover both bodies from the water and handed them over to the family.
A local resident said that the shortage of drinking water and difficult access to water sources force residents, especially children, to travel long distances to fetch water — a situation that sometimes leads to fatal incidents.
