KABUL (Pajhwok): Paraguay eliminated Turkiye from the 2026 World Cup after securing a dramatic 1-0 victory despite playing much of the match with 10 men, sealing their qualification hopes with a resilient defensive display on Saturday.

Paraguay struck early when Matias Galarza unleashed a low 25-metre (27-yard) strike just 64 seconds into the game, marking the fastest goal of the tournament and surpassing the previous record of 71 seconds set by Morocco’s Ismael Saibari against Scotland, according to Al Jazeera.

The South Americans were buoyed by their response to a heavy 4-1 defeat to the United States in their opening match, but their task became harder before half-time when Miguel Almiron was sent off for remarks directed at Mert Muldur while covering his mouth.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Paraguay held firm under sustained pressure from Turkiye, who dominated possession and registered 32 attempts on goal but failed to convert any of their chances.

Turkiye, coached by Vincenzo Montella, were left to rue their missed opportunities as Paraguay defended resolutely throughout the second half to preserve their narrow lead.

Following the result, the United States were confirmed as Group D winners after their earlier 2-0 win over Australia in Seattle.
