KABUL (Pajhwok): Severe storms and a landslide in China have left at least eight people dead, one missing and hundreds injured, while rescue teams continue searching for 16 people trapped after a landslide in Gansu province.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that 33 people were trapped after the landslide struck Tanchang County in Gansu, with 17 people rescued so far. Search operations are underway to locate the remaining 16 missing people.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered authorities to use all available resources for rescue and relief operations following the disaster.

The cause of the landslide has not yet been confirmed. The incident comes as several parts of China have been affected by heavy rainfall and extreme weather in recent days.

Meanwhile, severe storms in Hubei Province have killed eight people, left one missing and injured 275 others, state media reported. Weather officials said wind speeds in some areas reached 149 kilometres per hour.

China’s National Meteorological Centre has warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue, raising the risk of floods, landslides and other weather-related disasters in several regions.

The country is also preparing for the approach of super typhoon Bavi, which is moving towards Taiwan with maximum wind speeds reported at up to 290 kilometres per hour.
