KABUL (Pajhwok): One person has been killed and at least 16 others injured after a car drove into a crowd at an LGBTQ Pride parade in Berlin, Germany, on Saturday night, police said.
The incident occurred around 10:00pm local time near Tiergarten Park, where a white car struck several people before crashing into a tree. Some of the injured are in critical condition.
Police said the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. A search is underway for a suspect, described as a man known to authorities with alleged links to Islamic circles in Berlin. Officials said his motive and exact role remain under investigation.
The attack prompted authorities to cancel the Christopher Street Day Pride event, one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ celebrations, and urge people to leave the area immediately.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz vowed that those responsible would be fully investigated and punished, while Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner described the incident as “an attack on our free and cosmopolitan society.”
More than 2,200 police officers had been deployed to secure the parade, which had attracted hundreds of thousands of participants before the attack.
