GHAZNI (Pajhwok): A volleyball tournament featuring 36 teams from six provinces concluded in central Maidan Wardak province, with the Jalrez selected team emerging as champions.

The week-long tournament was held among teams from Kabul, Logar, Ghazni, Laghman, Nangarhar and Maidan Wardak, Zabihullah Wahaj, head of the provincial Olympic and Physical Education Department, said.

He said the event was organised by the provincial office of the Volleyball Federation with financial support from “Milli Steel”.

Wahaj said the tournament aimed to promote volleyball, encourage greater youth participation in the sport and strengthen unity and healthy competition among young people.

He said the final match was played between the Jalrez selected team and Haji Javed Laghman team, with Jalrez securing a 3-0 victory to win the championship.

He added that holding similar competitions would help further develop volleyball at the provincial level and provide opportunities for emerging talents.

Meanwhile, players welcomed the tournament and called for more such events to be organised.

Farid, one of the players, said: “This tournament was a valuable opportunity for young people. We competed against teams from different provinces and gained useful experience.”

Another player, Mohammad Osman, said such competitions played an important role in improving young athletes’ skills.

“We want more tournaments like this to be held so players can gain more experience, improve their performance and prepare for higher-level competitions,” he said.

At the end of the tournament, winning teams received cash prizes from Milli Steel.

It is worth mentioning that a provincial-level cricket tournament involving 24 clubs was also launched recently and will continue until October 20.
