KABUL (Pajhwok): The Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Corporation (UWSSC) has signed a contract worth one billion afghanis with a private company to transfer water from Shah wa Arous dam to Kabul’s 17th municipal district.

In a statement, the corporation said the project aimed to expand water supply services in Kabul and provide residents with clean drinking water.

Speaking at the contract-signing ceremony, UWSSC Executive Director Mawlawi Ghulam Rahman Kazim said the project would provide around 50,000 households in the district with access to clean drinking water upon completion.

Director General of State-Owned Enterprises Mawlawi Ahmad Jan Bilal said development projects were being implemented in two shifts in line with a decision by the economic deputy office of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA). He added that projects were under way in various parts of the country.

He described the approach as unprecedented in the country in recent decades.

UWSSC Commercial Director Engineer Abdul Matin Mutmain said the contract for surveying, designing, implementing and operating the project had been awarded to Paktia Mawj Water Supply Company, a private firm selected through an open competitive process.

According to the statement, the project would supply Kabul’s 17th district with 100 litres of surface water per second from Shah wa Arous dam and a further 100 litres per second from five wells, bringing the total supply to 200 litres per second.

The project is estimated to cost around one billion afghanis.

The corporation said the project would help expand water supply infrastructure, attract private-sector investment and improve the use of surface water.
