KABUL (Pajhwok): The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Tuesday postponed the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia from January to December due to recent regional developments and logistical challenges.

The 24-team tournament, originally scheduled to take place from Jan. 7 to Feb. 5, 2027, will now be held from Dec. 23, 2027, to Jan. 21, 2028, subject to approval by FIFA, the AFC said in a statement.

It said the new dates had been confirmed following extensive discussions and consultations with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and the local organising committee for the 2027 Asian Cup.

The statement added that the AFC’s competitions organising committee had decided to reschedule the tournament in view of exceptional circumstances arising from recent regional developments, significant logistical challenges and travel disruptions.

The AFC praised the efforts of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and the local organising committee, saying it would continue working with all relevant bodies to ensure the successful organisation of the tournament.

The new dates will be submitted to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) for approval.
