KABUL): French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived in Kabul for an unannounced five-hour visit on Tuesday, the French presidential palace announced.
He will meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai, International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and US commander General David Petraeus, and French soldiers in the Sarobi district of Kabul and in Kapisa province, the palace said in a statement.
There are 4,000 French soldiers under the command of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Sixty-four French soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since 2002.
The French government announced the withdrawal of French troops from Afghanistan after US President Barack Obama announced the US’s own troop drawdown plan.
France will pull out 400 soldiers in 2011 and the remainder by 2014.
