KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Farmers and tribal elders in Arghandab district of southern Kandahar province on Wednesday signed an agreement with the government not to cultivate poppy crops in return for fertilisers and improved quality wheat seeds.
After a meeting with Governor Dr. Tooryalai Wesa, the Arghandab district chief, Haji Shah Muhammad Ahmadi, told Pajhwok Afghan News locals also agreed to stop drug trafficking and no one would be allowed in this regard.
The meeting was also attended by the Provincial Reconstruction Team chief, representatives from aid agencies, tribal elders and farmers.
At the meeting, tribal elders called for measures at establishing the government’s writ in the district and launch of reconstruction works.
Tribal elder Haji Obaidullah said people of the area would not cultivate poppy if they were given fertilisers and seeds.
