KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): A girls’ school with the capacity to accommodate nearly 1,400 students was inaugurated in capital of northern Kunduz province on Thursday, officials said.
The two-storey school had 16 classrooms, eight administrative rooms, a water well, 500 pieces of furniture and a boundary wall has been built on one acre of land at a cost of $ 37,000 (1,817,440afs).
The German development bank (KfW) funded the project, Mohammad Zahir Nazam, the education department head, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Mrs. Pashtun, the principal, said the school previously operated in a rented building which was inappropriate for students. She said the newly constructed school could house 1,390 students in two shifts.
A 12th grade student, Anita, was happy with the new building, saying they studied under tents in the past. They faced difficulties during rains, she recalled.
The province has around 440 schools, with 227 having proper buildings and 300,000 students, the education director said.
