KABUL): German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed sympathy to President Hamid Karzai on the killing of 16 civilians in Kandahar’s Panjwai district, officials said on Monday.
According to a statement from the president’s office, Merkel had phoned Karzai to express her condolence on behalf of the German people on the tragic incident.
On Sunday morning an American soldier killed 16 villagers in their homes in Kandahar and some of the dead victims’ bodies were burnt, which triggered outburst among villagers.
The leader made a surprise visit to Mazar-i-Sharif on Monday to meet German soldiers deployed in the region.
She also invited Karzai to Germany before the Chicago Conference so they could discuss the strategic pact between Germany and Afghanistan.
The pact between both nations was discussed at the Bonn conference on December 6, 2011 and both sides confirmed they would endorse a long-term strategic plan.
