CHARIKAR, was closed for traffic on Monday due to a heavy snowstorm, stranding hundreds of passenger vehicles bound for Balkh province, an official said.
The busy highway had to be closed in central Parwan province at around 5pm due to a heavy windstorm that considerably reduced visibility, the Salang maintenance commander, Gen. Rajab, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said hundreds of passenger vehicles had been stopped on both sides of the pass to avoid possible mishaps. Some passengers stranded inside the pass had been rescued, the commander added.
Most of the stranded passengers wanted to attend the Gul-i-Sorkh fair in northern Balkh province, but they were stuck in the Tajikan area of Jabalus Siraj district.
Noorudin, a resident of Kabul, said they were caught in an awkward situation in the Tajikan area on their way to Mazar-i-Sharif.
