FARAH: A former district intelligence officer, who was released from jail 10 days ago, was found dead in the capital of western Farah province, officials said on Sunday.

Mohammad Arif was beheaded by unidentified men on Saturday night and his body found in the Noda village on the outskirts of Farah City, the provincial police chief said.

Brig. Gen. Shamsur Rahman Zahid told Pajhwok Afghan News the victim had been jobless after his release. The police chief would not give further details.

An intelligence official revealed that Arif, who had been intelligence officer for Jowin district, had spent six months in jail on moral and administrative corruption charges.

Arif’s wife said: “He received a telephone call from an unknown person and went out of home in his car. And today, we received his body.”

KABUL fighters were killed, 13 captured and tonnes of explosives were unearthed.

A Ministry of Interior’s statement on Sunday, said in the operation, one insurgent was wounded and half a tonne of explosives were discovered.

The search operations were carried out in Kabul, Kunduz, Kandahar, Helmand, Nimorz, Uruzgan, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, Khost and Paktia provinces.

The statement added that police also discovered 18 roadside bombs, in Kapisa, Kunduz, Balkh, Kandahar, Herat and Helmand provinces.

Besides, the 101 Asmaee police zone in Kabul arrested seven suspects on different criminal offences, it said.

Three days ago, the ministry disclosed that 35 militants were killed and 12 arrested in different security operations across the country.

KABUL: The Kabul mayor has warned land grabbers that the municipality will take stern action against offenders this year, including taking back illegally occupied plots.

“They (municipality) would seriously deal with land grabbers, who are trying to evade arrest,” Mohammad Younus Nawandish told a press conference in Kabul on Saturday.

Under a presidential decree, the mayor said, the municipality would identify the pieces of land that had been acquired illegally. Effective steps would be taken to wrest back the plots, he promised.

Nawandish said work on 63 construction projects, worth $64.44 million (3,232.31 million afs), would be launched this year. Over 100 kilometers of roads and streets will be asphalted, sidewalks constructed, public parks established and lighting along roads using solar energy would be done this year.  

He said 47 projects worth $37.44 million (1,877.99 million afs) would be funded by the municipality, while the finance ministry would provide money for 16 other schemes worth $27 million.

Last year, the municipality’s revenues touched 2.4 billion afs ($0.05). He said 1,500 kilometers of roads were needed in Kabul City, estimated to cost id=”mce_marker” billion. Donor countries and the World Bank have promised funds for infrastructure projects.

KUNAR: More than eight tonnes of explosives were seized in Asadabad, the capital of eastern Kunar province, the Ministry of Defence said on Sunday.

A statement from the ministry’s office in the eastern zone said the explosives were seized from a Pakistani truck loaded with bananas in the Zara Khar area on Saturday night.

The MoD said Pakistan– and China-made explosives were smuggled into the province through the Torkham border. Four people have been detained in connection with the explosives.

NANGARHAR: Six Taliban fighters were killed and two policemen wounded in a major clash between both parties in the eastern province of Nuristan, an official said Sunday.

The violent fight broke out in Kamdesh district of the province late Saturday evening, said Gen. Ghulamullah Khan, provincial police chief.

“The six militants also included a Commander Abdul Rahim,” Khan told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The wounded policemen are recuperating in hospital and said to be in stable condition.

But the anti-government Taliban militants are yet to comment on their defeat.

Meanwhile, unknown gunmen raided a doctor’s house – killing him and injuring his wife — in Khiwa district of Nangarhar province, said a local official.

Ejaz Momand, the district chief, said Dr. Khan Mohammad was killed in Kawo area on Saturday night.

When police team arrived, the assailants had fled the area, he said.

Dr. Ghulam Mohammad, the victim’s brother, said the deceased   was also the elder of three villages, besides being a doctor at the healthcare centre in the district.

He said his brother had no known enemies.
