SAR-I-PUL/SHIBERGHAN (PAN): Nineteen people were killed, 25 injured and 60 others reported missing after heavy floods ravaged northern Sar-i-Pul and Jawzjan provinces.
Officials said on Sunday said that hundreds of houses were also washed away. The floods hit Sayad district and the capital of Sar-i-Pul province.
The Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) head for the province said many domestic animals perished and hundreds of homes were damaged.
Syed Faizullah Sadat told Pajhwok Afghan News the exact scale of losses would be revealed once the assessment was completed.
Resident Mohammad, whose house was damaged, said: “The flood was unprecedented. A large number of houses were hit and livestock lost.”
In northern Jawzjan, over 1,000 families were displaced due to rising water levels in Khwaja Dokoh district, said Gawhar Babari, the town’s administrative head.
Residents of four villages were without shelter and 18 injured people were rescued and taken to a medical centre, he added. Babari said aid would be distributed to the victims.
