Baghlan Sugar Company transitions to govt control

KABUL): Shares of two German firms in the New Baghlan Sugar Company (NBSC) and monitoring responsibility for the factory were handed over to the Afghan government on Sunday, an official said.

The sugar production company, set up in 1940, was revived with the contribution of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock and two German stakeholders who invested more than 30 percent of the capital in the factory in 2008 after years of closure.

Under the responsibility shift — part of transition to the Afghan government — the companies’ shares have to be transferred Kabul, according to Agriculture Minister Mohammad Asif Rahimi.

He told a meeting the company’s affairs would handled by an executive board, which would try to ensure greater sugar beet supplies to the mills at a competitive price. The agriculture ministry will provide more land for the cultivation of sugar beet.
