KANDAHAR (PAN): A tribal elder and a counternarcotics police officer were killed in separate incidents of violence in southern Kandahar province, officials said on Wednesday.
The elder named Mohammad Hashim was killed in an apparent incident of target killing in the Loya Wayla area in the jurisdiction of 9th police district of Kandahar City, the governor’s spokesman, Javed Faisal, told Pajhwok Afghan News. The Tuesday night’s attack that left another two civilians injured involved gunmen riding motorcycles.
The attackers opened indiscriminate firing at the civilians, killing Hashim, who belonged to the Shah Walikot district and was on his way to his brother’s home, a security official said.
Without giving his name, the official said police had arrested the attackers and recovered pistols from their possession. The detainees are currently being interrogated.
Meanwhile, a counternarcotics police officer was killed when he attempted to defuse a roadside bomb in the Panjwai district. The blast in the Zangabad area also injured an Afghan National Army soldier, said the town’s administrative chief, Haji Fazal Mohammad Ishaqzai.
